I have never been an enpurmos fan of very large guitars, but each to their own I guess.

Hi all I was talking to someone yesterday about an SJ, which to me means small jumbo, right ? I then realised they were refering to a guitar called a Super Jumbo, which I am assuming is bigger than a Jumbo ? Has anyone built one here? I am struggling to get my head around what the advantage would be of this model ? Any Thoughts ? |

think of the gibson j-200. i guess the idea was to get volume. i don't think there are a whole lot of folks who like the guitar all that much. how would it sound if made by someone other than gibson? then there is the other, and first to my knowledge, sj, the southern jumbo. maybe folks just liked the initials. |

Been in this discussion many times. When I refer to my SJ Model (Small Jumbo) people often think of the Southern Jumbo or Super Jumbo instead. Personally I don't like them but some people do. |

the gibson southern jumbo is a variant of the j45. it is essentially a short scale, slope shouldered dreadnaught with a slightly wider lower bout. |

Just goes to show that it's time we adopted a full Linnaean taxonomic name for the types of guitars, just as is used for plants and animals. So, for instance, a small jumbo on Lance's pattern would become say: "Jumbo nana 'Kragenbrinkiensis' Whereas the OLF pattern one built by our own Crazyman would be "Jumbo nana 'Olfii' subsp. Crazymanmichaelii" Just an idea, maybe not. Colin |

i would have to go back and relearn my high school latin, about the only thing of which i can recall is the opening lines of caesar's commentary on the gaulic wars, "alia gaulia est diviso in tres partes," etc, or close thereto. i never could understand why we were made to read caesar who was a worse latin grammarian than we were. i had the same problem when i first came to the forum with everyone talking about sj this and that. i had never seen so may gibson fans, or so i thought in my ignorance. having over the years looked into so many gibson soundholes at the sj stamped inside i was blissfully unaware of the new sj taking its place in the guitar galaxy. oh well, just part of being a troglodyte i guess. |
